A GANG of bank thieves are being hunted by police following an early morning raid on a Barclay’s branch in West Swindon.

The group of burglars made off from the branch close to the West Swindon District Centre after causing an explosion and damaging two exterior cash machines, grabbing cash before fleeing.

Police were called to the branch on Rivenhall Road shortly after 3.15am on Saturday, after members of the public reported hearing an explosion from the building.

It is believed the gang had forced entry to the building by smashing the front door and made off with cash being held inside, before fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured car.

Police are investigating the incident and the branch remained closed to the public and cordoned off throughout the weekend.

The exact number of suspects has not yet been confirmed, but it is thought one vehicle was used in the escape.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.15am from a member of the public who said they had heard an explosion coming from the Barclay’s building.

“We attended and found that the two external ATMs had been damaged and the front door of the bank had been smashed.”

Police would not confirm the amount of money taken as the investigation is still ongoing.

CCTV footage is being examined and enquiries into the incident are still ongoing. No arrests have yet been made.

“A quantity of cash was stolen,” said the spokesman.

“It is believed a gang did this and made off in a dark-coloured car.

“Police are investigating and would ask that anyone with any information contact us.”
