COMMONWEAL School’s headteacher enjoyed one performance at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival so much he has persuaded the company to put on a performance on the school stage.

Headteacher Keith Defter – who himself performed at the festival in his youth - said he had enjoyed a variety of shows at this year’s Fringe, but the show stopper for him was the Viscera Theatre comedy/drama sell-out play, In Tents and Purposes.

This hour long show tells the story of two friends Libby – played by Roxy Dunn of Channel 4’s Babylon and BBC Three Top Coppers fame - and Sam, played by Alys Metcalf who performed in The Play That Goes Wrong in London’s West End West End.

While at a music festival the pair compete with their egos to tell a comic, time-hopping story, exploring whether our lives are predetermined or shaped by our choices.

In Tents and Purposes was written by Roxy, who was shortlisted for a Channel 4/Oran Mor Comedy Drama Award, directed by Chris Head and developed with Complicite’s Mick Barnfather.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have this sell-out Edinburgh Fringe 2016 show performed at Commonweal,” said Keith.

“Having seen and thoroughly enjoyed it only a matter of weeks ago I cannot recommend it highly enough. Read the blurb; google the company but make sure you don’t miss it.

“I went to Edinburgh first in 1976 as a student and then pretty much every year since 1989. I did a number of shows over the years both as performer and director. This helped me develop my love for the arts.”

Keith spoke to the actors after the show and persuaded them to come along to Commonweal C6 auditorium on Thursday, October 20 to perform an afternoon show and masterclass to GCSE and A Level Drama students from across the Borough.

The masterclass will cover Acting Techniques and Improvisation with a Q&A at the end about Working in the Industry. Schools can purchase tickets, priced at £5, by emailing josie@commonweal.co.uk.

There will also be an evening performance to the wider community also charged at £5 a ticket which can be purchased on the door.

The show starts at 7pm with 20 minutes of comedy shorts from the cream of Commonweal upper school students.

This will be followed by a break where the public can purchase refreshments from the licensed bar before the play begins.
