The dispute between the operators of a golf course in Swindon and some of the golfers who use it will continue - at least for another month.

Twigmarket Ltd, the company which runs Broome Manor Golf Complex, plans to build eight all-weather football pitches and extra parking on the last three holes of its nine-hole course.

It is part of an upgrade which will see an expanded driving range and new bars and was due to be discussed by Swindon Borough Council’s planning committee on Tuesday.

The plan is opposed by many of those who use the nine-hole course, as well as South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland, as they say it will restrict access to the sport for those who are starting to play golf, or who may not be capable of a full round of 18 holes.

Twigmarket, which runs the council-owned site, says it is necessary to diversify its business away from just golf in order to gain a new market and thrive into the future.

But the application was removed from Tuesday evening’s agenda to allow for Sport England to make comments on the proposals prior to it be considered and determined.

The next opportunity for it to return to the committee is the meeting to be held on Tuesday, November 8.
