Five people were arrested and thousands of pounds of drugs were seized as armed police raided a string of homes around the county.

Wiltshire Police raided a house on Inglesham Road early on Saturday morning as part of Operation Scorpion, aimed at tackling and disrupting drug supply.

They made a total of five arrests in their raids across the county, and seized £4,000 of Class A drugs.

Officers were distributed all across towns in Wiltshire this weekend, executing warrants, patrolling the streets, carrying out licensing checks and visiting bars to dismantle local drug networks.

This led the police to raiding a house on Inglesham Road, where three adult males were apprehended.

Whilst handcuffed, one of the men enquired about being allowed a cigarette, to which an officer allowed.

“I will roll it but give me a minute because I quit smoking a while ago so it may be a little bit loose,” responded the officer.

Sgt James Twyford said: “We have come with the aim of looking for cocaine following intelligence that has come into us and we have found one bag so far.

“It is always a bit nerve-wracking going into the unknown as you don’t necessarily know what you’re going to find on the other side of that door so there is always that degree of trepidation.

“With children being at the address this morning, we decided that a more subtle and discrete approach was the way forwards, and it has absolutely paid off.”

After entering around the side of the property, officers located an outhouse at the far end of the back garden where the three men were found.

When asked about the humorous interactions regarding the cigarette, Sgt Twyford revealed it was no surprise to him.

“The occupants sort of know what to expect and there is a level of appropriate humour that is there,” he said.

“They’re obviously not pleased to see us as you’d expect, but they’re taking it as well as anyone would.”

Operation Scorpion proved to be a success this weekend with £4,000 worth of Class A drugs seized, as well as £2,000 of cash outright seized.

The police also made five arrests for the possession of Class A drugs, including two 18-year-olds, a 19-year-old, a 29-year-old and a 31-year-old.

The five arrests were made across Wiltshire with the suspects coming from Surrey Trowbridge, Chippenham and Leeds.

Over 30 officers were involved during the operation, with both sniffer dogs and firearms present.
