Swindon Borough Council’s planning committee will next week take a Mulligan - a golfing term for having another go at a badly-hit shot - on controversial plans to redevelop Broome Manor Golf Club.

Last month, with dozens of golfers opposed to the plan already in the public gallery for the committee’s debate and decision on Twigmarket’s development proposals, proceedings were halted and postponed because members of the committee had received emails about the plan which they hadn’t passed on to planning officers.

Borough solicitor Craig Hallett said that may leave the council open to challenges from either side, depending on the decision,  if it appeared the committee was either swayed by considerations it should not take into account, or hadn’t passed on something that should be considered to officers before the report.

As well as building a much bigger driving range and expanding catering capacity, Twigmarket Ltd wants to build eight all-weather football pitches and associated parking – but that will mean digging up three holes of the nine-hole course – something many users of the complex oppose.

Having had the matter removed at the last minute from its agenda in July 2022, the committee will attempt to decide the matter at the third attempt on Tuesday, January 10 at 6pm.
