The driver who ploughed into a shopfront during a major car crash in Swindon at the weekend has now been arrested.

A black Honda Civic had been driving on Cricklade Road in the early hours of Saturday morning without its lights on, police had earlier revealed.

After officers spotted the vehicle, the driver failed to stop the car and crashed into a nearby shop on the road.

Michael’s Workwear LTD’s shopfront was severely damaged following the smash, with the building’s brickwork exposed, glass smashed and the shutter mangled.

The scene later on Saturday morning was a shocking one as onlookers could see that the car’s engine was separated from the bonnet, landing metres away on the pavement near the Iceland supermarket.

It caused one of Swindon’s busiest roads to be closed for most of Saturday.

Police have since now provided an update on the driver of the Honda Civic as well as some details about the man behind the wheel.

The driver, who is in his 30s, has been arrested following the crash for dangerous driving as well as failing to stop for the police and driving without a license.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “A man in his 30s from Swindon has since been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and driving without a licence.”

Alongside the police, two fire crews were dispatched to the scene as well, as the crash had not only damaged the shop and car but had caused a gas leak after a pipe had been damaged in the collision.

The firefighters stayed at the crash site until the gas leak was isolated by engineers.

A Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called to Cricklade Road, Swindon at 12.09am on Saturday after a car collided with a building.

“Two crews from Swindon fire station attended; nobody was trapped, but the collision damaged a gas pipe on the building so a safety cordon was put into place with firefighters on stand-by until gas engineers were able to isolate the leak.

“Our stop was at 1.39am, when we handed over the cordon to Swindon Borough Council and the police.”
