A popular Indian restaurant in Wiltshire has been gutted by a major fire.

Seven fire crews were called to The Bridge Indian Restaurant and Takeaway in Sherston at 4.16pm on Tuesday, April 9.

The fire had spread to the roof, with pictures showing it black and charred, with windows smashed.

In total, 13 firefighters attended from seven stations, with the Easton B4040 road closed while the ‘well-developed’ blaze was tackled with four water jets.

One person was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke, but there were no other injuries. 

The road is no longer reported as closed.

A spokesperson from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a restaurant in Easton Town, Sherston at 4.16pm yesterday (April 9) for a well-developed fire that had spread into the roof. 

“Crews attended from Malmesbury, Chippenham (x2) and Royal Wootton Bassett, together with Gloucestershire crews from Tetbury, Wotton-under-Edge and Nailsworth, and two Avon pumps from Yate. 

“The aerial appliance from Swindon and a support vehicle from Devizes were also sent.

“The stop was at 8.45pm, with all firefighters away from the scene by 10pm. 

“The fire was extinguished using 13 breathing apparatus wearers, two main jets and two hose reel jets. 

“Everyone in the building was out safely when we arrived, although one person did go to hospital for checks after suffering smoke inhalation. 

“An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.”

The fire service added on  X: “50 per cent of the building, including the roof, was destroyed by the fire.

“A structural engineer attended to check the safety of the building following the fire. 

“All crews have now left.”

Members of the Sherston residents’ group left their condolences. One said: “That’s awful. They’ve worked so hard since they opened. 

“People’s home and livelihood. And such an asset to the village.”

Another said: “Awful news, honestly the best curry house I’ve been to in years and years. 

“Feel so sorry for them, please share if anyone sets up a GoFundMe page or anything.”

The owner responded: "It’s really means a lot for all of your kind support today and raised hand for supporting.

"No word to say... Please keep us in your prayers. Thankfully everyone safe."
