WES Foderingham will be a Swindon Town player until the summer of 2015 after signing a new two-year contract with the club this afternoon.

The goalkeeper, who joined the Robins on an initial loan deal from Crystal Palace in October 2011 and has since become a fans’ favourite at the County Ground, verbally agreed new terms on Friday and put pen to paper today.

Foderingham stressed that the decision to remain with Swindon was the “right thing” to do after sitting down with chairman Jed McCrory and Lee Power, who plays a major role in player recruitment at Town.

He said: “I spoke to the gaffer and I spoke to Jed and I spoke to Lee as well and they wanted to keep me at the club. When I spoke to you after the Brentford game I said I wanted to be here next season and nothing’s really changed.

“It was just a case of sitting down and discussing a new contract. Obviously I’ve been speaking to my agent and speaking to the club as well and there’s always going to be interest around and there was interest in the summer but my main intention was to sign and prolong my stay here.

“My priority is to be playing games and there’s no substitute for that. I’m looking forward to seeing what the season holds for us.”

Despite a mass turnover of players over the summer, Foderingham is convinced the new-look, youthful Swindon squad can challenge for honours this term.

He said: “It’s hard to say, it’s going to be a lot more difficult this season with the clubs coming down and coming up of higher quality than they were before.

“The squad’s going to change a lot but that doesn’t mean we’re going to be less competitive. We’ll have a young bunch of hungry boys who are looking to make their way not just in League One but hopefully onto the Championship and the Premiership.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that next season we’ll be competitive.”

The stopper suggested a handful of clubs had shown some interest in him over the off-season, but nothing to warrant him opting not to extend his stay in Wiltshire.

He said: “I spoke to my agent and he said he’d come back to me if there was something concrete, and I said the same to him. I didn’t want to hear about anything if it wasn’t concrete.

“He said there was a bit of interest but the decision was ultimately down to me because I had a year left on my contract. After sitting down with Jed and Lee and when they spoke to me about their plans for the next few seasons, where I am with my goalkeeping and future development it was the right thing to stay here.

“There’s a security for me. Going into the last year of your contract I like being settled and happy and now it’s good to get that sorted.”
