RICKY Pow has put his chance of fighting for a light-heavyweight title on hold to take on former world champion Gabriel Campillo.

The Alicante-based fighter is due to be part of Keith Mayo’s big summer triple title show at the Oasis Leisure Centre in June.

However, the opportunity to take on the former 175 pound king on May 5 at the Gran Canaria Arena, Las Palmas in Spain has arisen.

Swindon promoter Mayo is trying to line up a shot at the IBO Latino light-heavyweight title for Pow, but that has now been placed on the back burner until after his bout with former WBA world champion Campillo.

Mayo said: “Ricky is still up for fighting on my show in June, but we just have to see how this fight goes.

“It would be a huge scalp for Ricky if he can beat Campillo and I’m hoping that I can get over to Spain to see it.

“I have already got a few opponents lined up for Ricky in June, but now we will just have to wait and see how this goes first.”

One worry for Mayo is that 27-year-old Pow is susceptible to cuts, his last bout, against Josef Obselo, was ended in the first round after a clash of heads left him with a deep gash above the left eye.

“If Ricky does become unavailable then I will look to put an International or British Masters title fight on the bill,” Mayo said.

Campillo, who won his title in 2009 with a majority decision over Beibut Shumenov, will be looking to use this fight to coorect his career path after he suffered a ninth round knock out by Andrzej Fonfara, who will now face Adonis Stevenson next month for the WBC crown, in Chicago back in August.

Campillo – The Chico Guapo – had suffered a third stoppage by Sergey Kovalev, prior to him winning the WBO title, and lost in world title bouts to Tavoris Cloud and Shumenov, who takes on Bernard Hopkins in Washington on Saturday in a WBA/IBF/IBA unification bout.

Meanwhile, former Walcot and England amateur Ryan Martin has been forced to withdraw from next Saturday’s fight in Gloucester.

The Mayo-managed youngster was set to make his second outing in the paid ranks at the GL1 Leisure Centre, however, an injury to his hand has meant that his has postponed his next outing until June.

Mayo said: “Ryan’s hand just swelled up. He can’t punch anything at the moment and he will see a specialist this week.

“It is not too serious, so it is just a case of keeping himself fit and come back for June show.”
