WALCOT boxer Orges Peroshi got his season off to the best possible start with a victory at the Devizes ABC boxing show last Saturday, writes Dave Veysey.

The 16-year-old encountered Ross Byrne from the Downend Academy Boxing Club in Bristol.

However, it was not all one-way traffic. The Bristolian put his superior height and reach to good use edgeing the opening round, scoring with left jabs as Peroshi advanced.

After a briefing from Walcot coach Harold Scott, the Wroughton-based Albanian changed his gameplan during the second two minutes, keeping closer to his much taller opponent and scoring repeatedly with left and right hooks.

He totally dominated the session and shook Byrne up with some big punches.

During one attack, he accidently landed a low blow, for which he was reprimanded by the referee But he comfortably took the round and then he carried on the good work into the final two minutes.

After a five-punch combination from Orges had rained down upon him, Byrne was given a standing count by the referee, and looked unlikely to remain upright for the remainder of the contest.

However, he bravely carried on to hear the final bell, where Peroshi was awarded a unanimous points’ decision by the ringside judges.

But there was disappointment for clubmate Bill Harris at the Barton Hill ABC event in Bristol.

The 11-year-old met Khyal Chumber from Priory Park ABC in Dudley, and after three entertaining rounds of boxing, the Midlander took the decision on points.
