ELDENE caused the shock of the third round in the Sunday League Knockout Cup at the weekend when the struggling Division Three outfit sunk Wanborough 3-0.

First half goals from Liam Alford, Jamie McGlone and Rich Hanley were enough for Eldene to beat their Division Two visitors.

While Wanborough played the second half with only 10 men, Eldene had to stand firm after the interval with keeper Adam Godwin pulling off several fantastic saves.

Eldene manager Calum Dunn was delighted with the result.

“It was a great performance from my players,” he said. “They thoroughly deserved the win.

“Maybe Wanborough underestimated us a little as we are towards the bottom of Division Three, but we were the better side throughout.

“It would be nice if we could get a team similar to ourselves in the next round, but if we get one of the favourites we will just have to go out there and give it our all again.”

Elsewhere in the Knockout Cup, the Division One second-v-third battle saw Longs Bar defeat SKS Blyskawica 3-1, while Division Four strugglers Stratton Saints thrashed their league leaders Chiseldon 8-2.

Division One bottom side Inter Sandgate put their league troubles behind them in the Chairman’s Trophy.

Having not picked up a single point this term in the top flight, Sandgate ran out 15-2 winners over Division Three side G Power Solutions.

Also in the trophy, AFC Moonrakers cruised to a 9-0 success over Nationwide Pavilion, while West Swindon Wanderers edged a nine-goal thriller at Cricklade MTA.

Meanwhile, in the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield, Division Six outfit Swindon Athletic claimed a 3-1 success over Division Three leaders Cleeve Tech.

For large periods of the game Swindon outpaced and outfought their higher league opposition and deservedly ran out winners with goals from Andy Thorp, Jonathan Peachey and Ashley Devenney.
