SWINDON’S men’s first XI finally chalked up their first home win of the season, beating a struggling Bristol UWE side 2-0.

The home side started strongly, with Jim Towers and Alex Hynes winning early short corners that went unconverted.

Despite concerted pressure and patient play, Swindon failed to capitalise and the half ended goalless.

The half-time message was clear from captain Luke Cejer - maintain composure and continue to play the right kind of hockey and the goals would come.

Thomas Hunt, playing out of position, started to grow into his new midfield role, working well with Pete Gilbert down the left.

Swindon’s dominance finally paid off when yet another short corner was beautifully worked and Cejer deflected an effort under the keeper.

The hosts continued to press, creating opportunities from open play that were again squandered.

Eventually, another short corner was worked well and Phil Scarisbrick made amends for his earlier miss with a tidy finish.

Sam Monks and Lewis Dyer were rarely troubled in defence, remaining composed throughout and were in total control when they were called into action.

Veteran keeper Alan Gough saw little of the ball but made a couple of smart saves when needed.

Swindon continued to press but failed to take further advantage of their dominance.
