CREWE manager Steve Davis has backed Swindon to get over their blip in form and push for promotion come the end of the season after watching his side hold Town to a 0-0 draw at Gresty Road.

Davis hailed Mark Cooper’s side as one of the best in the league but admitted that their set-up may have been a bit predictable in the wake of the game.

Crewe, like many teams that have faced Swindon this season, went into the game with a game plan to be difficult to break down and held Swindon with two solid banks of four behind the ball when out of possession.

Despite the scoreline and both teams ending the game with just ten men on the pitch, Davis felt that the game was a ‘good spectacle’ and was happy with how his team stuck to their task.

“They’re one of the best teams in the league,” he told the Swindon Advertiser after the game.

“There are probably three or four that have got that quality they have got.

“They have probably fallen below their standards today, but I think a lot of that was to do with us as well.

“I thought we played very well today and limited them.

“They found it a bit frustrating, the way we set up, and we had our chances as much as they had their chances.

“I thought it was a really good spectacle, a great game to watch and they are a good side.

“Swindon played how we thought they would. They have a system of playing and if you try and press, you get picked off.

“You have to be patient and set up to be hard to get through the middle and I think we did that well today.”

Swindon have now not won in their last four trips away from the County Ground and have just one win in their last five games anywhere.

However, Davis has backed Cooper’s men to bounce back and be in the fight for promotion come the end of the season.

“Swindon have had a little bit of a blip,” he added.

“They beat Bradford midweek with a terrific first-half performance and they are going to be up there -without a doubt - with that group.

“We knew that they hadn’t been able to win those games, although their performances have been good still.

“They haven’t been playing poorly and getting beat, but things haven’t quite dropped for them or gone for them, which happens in a season.

“I think he (Cooper) has got enough there to recover from any setback that he has.

“Like any team in any season, they are going to have setbacks - it has just come at a time towards the crunch end of the season when they want to be keeping pace with the others.

“I am sure Mark is capable and the players are capable of keeping themselves up there.”
