SWINDON Town Ladies manager Steve Robertson thinks that the Women’s Premier League South West Division One title remains in his side’s hands.

On Sunday, Town were finally back in action after kicking their heels for eight weeks and were unable to add another valuable three points to their tally as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chichester City at Fairford Town’s Cinder Lane ground.

But following Forest Green Rovers’ crushing 5-0 defeat at Larkhall Athletic and Exeter City’s 4-2 loss to bottom-of-the-table St Nicholas, Swindon’s title charge is in rude health.

With three games to play, Robertson’s team are second in the table, a point behind Southampton Saints, who have already completed their fixture list.

“If you look at the results, with the other teams chasing us for the title losing, it’s a point gained,” said the Town Ladies boss.

“I don’t know how many years this season has gone on but we’ve got three games left and it’s in our hands.

“We play Cheltenham next week and then we play Exeter and Shanklin. Hopefully, the girls can keep it going for those last few.”

Town captain Michelle Rich put the hosts in front in the first half but Chichester restored parity almost instantly before the two teams battled away, with neither able to conjure up a winning goal.

Robertson said: “I think we did look a bit like we hadn’t played for well over a month but it was a good game of football and a draw was probably a fair result.

“We took the lead pretty early on before they equalised pretty much five minutes later, and for most of the first half, they put a bit of an onslaught on us.

“But we had a good spell about 25 minutes into the second half where we put them under a lot of pressure.

“It was a real battle in the pouring rain, with plenty of tackles going in, and the only real disappointment is that there was no stoppage time.

“There were six substitutions and the trainer was on three or four times but maybe the referee was cold?

“We were going for a winner and both managers were unhappy but his response was ‘you’ve played 45. What more do you want?’.”
