JAMIE Cox has missed out on sparring with Floyd Mayweather JR ahead the bout that is being billed as the ‘Fight of the Century’ because he was ‘too big’, according to his trainer John Costello.

The Swindon southpaw has been out in Las Vegas for two weeks with manager/trainer Lee Beard and stable-mate Jack Catterall.

The southpaw duo had been brought in as some of Mayweather’s sparring partners for the long awaited clash with Manny Pacquiao on May 2.

However, once middleweight Cox arrived at the gym in Nevada, Mayweather’s team felt that he was too big for the welterweight and light-middleweight king.

“Jamie has been out there with Jack Catterall,” Costello told the Advertiser. “But they felt that Jamie was a little too big.

“I that find strange because he is the closest that he will get to Manny Pacquiao, but he has been getting some great work while he is out there.

“Jamie’s been sparring with Dennis Douglin and he says that Jamie is the strongest that he has faced.

“Jack has been sparring Floyd and has done well and I take the fact that they didn’t fancy Jamie as a compliment.”

The link between the unbeaten pound-for-pound king Mayweather and Cox arose through Beard as he worked alongside Floyd Mayweather Snr when he was Ricky Hatton’s trainer.

The 28-year-old Swindonian made a successful return to the ring in February by stopping Alistair Warren, and now spending time in Vegas sparring, 2015 is shaping up to being an exciting year for Cox.

“We should have some news on his next fight soon,” Costello added.
