SWINDON Town’s top scorer Andy Williams is fighting to be fit for Sunday’s all-important play-off final at Wembley, after missing out on the sensational semi-final second leg against Sheffield United.

Williams has scored 21 goals this season, with only Rochdale’s Ian Henderson and Joe Garner – from final opponents Preston North End – above him in the League One top scorer leaderboard.

However, the 28-year-old sustained a muscle tear when he came on for the final 14 minutes of Town’s first leg victory against Sheffield United and missed the return game at the County Ground.

Williams is now in a race to be fit so he can play a part in the final, after previously getting to the Conference play-off final with Hereford United when the new Wembley was being constructed.

“I’m not quite fully fit, but I’m looking forward to the game,” Williams told the Adver. “Obviously I missed the second leg of the play-off so I’m still fighting to get fit for Wembley, but really excited to have my first experience of Wembley.

“I went to the old Wembley and I got to a play-off final when the new Wembley was being built, so unfortunately we had to play somewhere else, but I’m looking forward to going to the new stadium for the first time.

“I haven’t been fully training. I did a bit of running the other day, but I’ve got another test to see how I’m doing and I just need to try and stay positive.

“It’s not a great injury and I think if it was the middle of the season I probably wouldn’t be fit to play, but obviously for the last game of the season, a final at Wembley, you tend to play through a few little pains and I imagine that is what I’ll be doing come Sunday.”

Williams has undergone injections and oxygen therapy to help speed up his recovery and, after missing out on the goal fest in Town’s 5-5 draw with Sheffield United, he is desperate to be back on the scoresheet.

“It’s hard enough to miss games at the best of times, especially as that was the first game I’d missed all season, so it was frustrating not to be involved when you see goals flying in left, right and centre,” he said.

“As a striker you want to be on the end of all the chances being created, but the second leg was a great game to watch from a neutral perspective.

“The lads did great to get us to Wembley and hopefully achieve what we all set out to do at the start of the season. We’ve gone one step further than last season and there’s no point going to Wembley unless you’re going there to win and finish it off in style.”

While Williams doesn’t want to predict how the game will play out, he hopes he can take his goal scoring form into the final and play an important part in Town’s promotion bid.

He added: “The last month has been a bit frustrating for me as I’ve been in and out of the team. Obviously I’ve been more than happy with the way I’ve done this season, scoring 22 in 31 starts, so I’ve been happy with my performances.

“All I’ve got to do is make sure I’m as fit as I can possibly be for the weekend and, fingers crossed, the gaffer chooses to pick me or bring me on.”
