LAWRENCE Bennett says that he has been left in limbo after Matty Askin was forced to postpone their English cruiserweight title clash.

The self-styled Bad Boy was due to face the reigning champion later this month after Askin’s promoter Frank Warren won the purse bids to stage the clash.

However Bennett is now waiting to hear from the British Boxing Board of Control as to what will happen next after his opponent withdrew through injury.

“Matty Askin has pulled out and put a medical note into the board,” Bennett said. “I’m not sure what the injury is, all I know is that we have to wait.

“The board meet on June 9 and then we will see what they have to say.

“The fight is supposed to happen by the end of July so they may leave it until then. They could say that Matty has had enough time and force him to fight or vacate - I just don’t know, I’m left in limbo.”

Despite having to be forced to wait for his big chance at the English crown, Bennett, who successfully defended his Southern Area title in March with a first round stoppage of Jamie Hearn, says that he is reluctant to take a fight in the interim.

“This is my breakthrough fight,” the 32-year-old said. “This is a massive fight for me so I can’t risk having a warm-up.

“There are so many risks about having a a warm-up fight, I could get cut or even worse, the English title fight is the one I want.

“I’m going to stay in the gym and I’ll be ready for when we get the news of what is happening.

“All I know is that my next fight will be for the English title and I will definitely know more in the next 10 days.”
