NATIONWIDE House ended Royal Wootton Bassett’s undefeated reign in the Wiltshire League.

House, who were relegated from the West of England Premier League last term, have endured a mixed bag of results this season, but on Saturday they sneaked a one-wicket success over the Division One table-toppers in a low-scoring match.

The Pipers Way side won the toss and asked Bassett to bat first but it took Nationwide until the 10th over to make the breakthrough with Shashank Kumar dismissing Jack Twine to leave Bassett 22-1.

That quickly became 23-2 when Russell Arkley (5-34) claimed the first of his victims as he removed Twine’s opening partner Sam Lawro.

Skipper Darren Beasant and Akash Sharma put on a 44-run stand for the third wicket before Arkley ripped out their middle order.

Bassett went from 67-2 to 87-7, but Robert Pamphilion (37*) and Neilon Joseph (16) then steadied the before the latter was bowled by Joe Perkins.

The Nationwide bowler then quickly mopped up the tail, taking three wickets in seven balls, as Bassett were dismissed for 129.

In reply, Nationwide lost opener Matthew Hyde in the sixth over before a 35-run stand between Mick Harris and Nick Clarke put the hosts in control.

However, Harris was the first of three run outs for Nationwide - Nick Clarke (42) and Mark Morris followed suit - as their chase stuttered.

But Nationwide were not to be denied victory as Arkley struck the winning boundary in the 38th over.

Swindon Civil Service slumped to a seven-wicket loss at Lacock after being skittled out for 96, with the hosts’ Leigh Rodgers (5-20) and Sam Thomson (4-40) the chief destroyers.

Lacock required just 20 overs to reach their target and condemn their visitors to the bottom of the table.

Beanacre and Melksham climbed off the foot of table and leap-frogged Civil Service, who only claimed two points in their Lacock loss, despite a 78-run loss to Box.

The hosts, who like Civil Service have 69 points, jumped one place by virtue of winning more matches.

However, against Box it was another missed opportunity.

The visitors were put into bat first and Andy Footner struck in the second over for Beanacre to remove Johnny Page for a duck.

However, Box skipper Richard Foley and Chris Bultitude then set about patiently rebuilding the innings.

Division 2

Swindon United Churches returned to the top of the table with a resounding 94-run victory over visitors Heytesbury & Sutton Veny at Sevenhampton.

Despite missing a trio of key players, opening batsman Jimmy Mann and skipper and bowler Richard Martin guided Churches home.

Heytesbury won the toss and asked the home side to bat first and a solid first-wicket partnership between Mann (76) and Keith Coatsworth (20) saw off the opening bowlers and set the platform for a large score.

Matt Runkel (52), in at number three, made his maiden half-century for the club, while Liam Brooks crashed an unbeaten 28-ball 45 as Churches closed on 231-5.

Early wickets from Martin (4-27) and Dean Tomlin (1-55) ensured that the Heytesbury chase didn’t get going.

A score of 14-0 quickly became 48-4 and despite resistance from Olly Hares (42), the Churches change bowlers of Deba Saha (3-32) and Sam Nissanka kept things tight whilst chipping away at the wickets column.

Ravi Dhayalan picked up the final wicket with his second ball to seal victory in the 35th over as they visitors were dismissed for 137.

Division 4

Beanacre seconds claimed a 46-run success at Royal Wootton Bassett thirds.

However, the visitors were quickly reduced to 25-3 after eight overs with Morgan Marsh-Ballard (4-57) the chief destroyer.

Phil Meek (44) and Chris Shearn then led an impressive counter-attack for Beanacre, putting on 98 in 12 overs.

Tim Carpenter (11) then joined Shearn to share a fifth-wicket partnership of 43, while Chris Long (16) and the latter enjoyed a 40-run stand.

Shearn managed to reach his centruy before being dismissed for 103 as Beanacre went on to close on a respectable 243-8.

Yasir Irshad flew out of the blocks in the first few overs of Bassett’s reply as they scored 61 in the opening eight overs.

However, Mark Mullis made the crucial breakthrough with two wickets in two overs - including Irshad for 39.

Some tight bowling from Carpenter (2-30) and Tom Watling (3-42) brought the visitors back into the game, before Long finished the innings with 3-17.

Thirteen-year-old Prav Chahal made an excellent 71 for Bassett as they were eventually bowled out for 197.
