SHRIVENHAM have won the Royal County of Berkshire mixed double rinks for the first time in the club’s 47-year history.
Last Sunday at Reading Bowls Club, the rink of Cathy Hope, Helen Simpson, Dave and Scott Winskill came up trumps on the extra end of their semi-final against Bracknell after a 29-29 tie, Winskill drawing the winning shot with his last wood.
In the final against four-time winners Wokingham, Winskill’s rink lost 16-14 but Val Carter, Yvonne and Clive Randall and skip Keith Carter tied their match 34-34 going into the last end.
Carter drew a shot within inches of the jack with his last wood and the Wokingham skip drove and missed, as Shrivenham improved on their 2010 runners-up spot.
To complete a fine double, Simpson won the Berkshire ladies champion of champions title.
Having won the two-wood singles twice in recent years, and lost in the semi-finals of the two-wood in the national finals two seasons ago, she scooped the champion of champions crown with a 21-19 victory over Pam Sims (Windsor Great Park) at Burghfield last Saturday.
