SWINDON are going to have to wait to discover if they will be relegated to the Wiltshire Division despite ending the campaign with a 27-run win at Frenchay.

The County Ground side finished their season third from bottom in Glos/Wilts Division, a position that skipper Andy Staff believed would be good enough to stay up.

However, Staff said that south Gloucestershire side Thornbury, who finished third in Premier Two, have requested to be placed in the new Glos/Wilts Division rather than the Bristol/Somerset league, which could alter the situation.

“Our objective at the start of the season was to stay in the new Glos/Wilts Division,” Staff said.

“But at the moment that is looking unlikely as Thornbury have requested to be placed in the division.

“If we are in the Wiltshire Division next year we will rebuild, use the experiences of this season and push forward and look for promotion.

“But the whole structure has still to be ratified. I think that happens next week.

“If we do go down then we will get the boys together and start planning for the new season.”

Following all the rain in the build-up to the game at Frenchay’s Bob Stone Ground, Swindon were asked to bat on a green wicket after losing the toss.

With Paul Paginton and Liam Tucker both back in the hutch without troubling the scoring Marc Williamson and Alex Kill set about repairing the damage.

Opener Williamson top-scored for the visitors with 60, while Kill hit a half-century as Swindon closed on 224-9 with Will Nichols also chipping in with a 34.

In reply, Frenchay opener Jordan Khan struck 57, Tyrone Isitt chipped in with 42 and Matthew Taylor scored 33, however Nichols (3-48), Michael Wilson (2-41), Kill (2-20) and Tom Codling (2-23) shared the wickets around as the hosts were bowled out for 197 with two-and-a-half-overs to spare.

“It was nice to end the season with a win,” Staff said. “We have been on a bit of a bad run lately so to finish on a high.

“The wicket was pretty green early on and it was quite difficult to bat on. But Marc Williamson and Killer got us to a pretty good total.

“The wicket dried out and it did get a bit easier to bat but we took key wickets and vital points in the game.

“We just have to wait now to see where we will be playing next season.”
