KELVIN Young is relishing the opportunity to fight live on Sky Sports after being handed an English super-middleweight final eliminator chance.

The Penhill pugilist will collide with ex-Premier League striker Leon McKenzie at the Copper Box in London on January 30.

The contest appears on the undercard of George Groves’ latest comeback fight, following the Londoner’s WBC world super-middleweight defeat to Badou Jack in September.

Getting a chance his show what he can do on the big stage is a source of great excitement for Young.

“I had been training to face Darryll Williams for the Southern Area title,” The 28-year-old told the Advertiser. “Then he got injured and pulled out.

“Joe (Wrona, Young’s trainer) told me to stay in the gym as something else would come along.

“Now this has happened – I believe these things happen for a reason and I can’t wait, I’m excited by it.

“There are some great fights on the show. With George Groves topping the bill, it will be a great night fighting at a great venue.”

This past year has seen Young Gun compete in the light-heavyweight division, where he has drawn two and won one, after he was stripped of his IBO inter-continental super-middleweight crown following a loss in a non-title fight.

With this bout back at 12 stone, the former Southern Area champion is looking forward to being in the division where he has had the most success.

“This is at my favoured weight,” Young added. “I’ve had my best performances at super-middle.

“I know that I’m going to need to roll back the years to get the win, but I believe that I will be fighting for the English title next year.”

After hanging up his boots, two years ago, former Norwich City striker McKenzie has had eight fights in the pro ranks – winning seven and drawing one.

While he may be 37-years-old and a newcomer to the paid ranks, the ex-footballer comes from a fighting family with his uncle Duke a former three-weight world champion and his father Clinton held the British and European light-welterweight titles.

“He is a young 37, he hasn’t got many miles on the clock, where I have been in some wars,” Young said.

“I know he would have been around boxing all his life, he comes from a great boxing family.

“But I feel my experience at this level will make this a 50-50 fight.”
