DAVE Webb has no doubt that Connor Waldon can be a big success at Swindon Supermarine after bringing the young striker back to the club.

Former Swindon Town youngster Waldon spent three months on loan at the Webb’s Wood Stadium last season before being recruited on a permanent basis for 2015-16.

However, he headed out of the door less than a month into the campaign to join Marine’s Division One West rivals Mangotsfield United.

Waldon has since departed the Bristol club and Marine boss Webb was at the front of the queue again when it came to securing his signature this time around.

“He did brilliantly for us last season,” said Webb.

“We had the opportunity to bring him back at the start of the season, which we did, but it just didn’t work out. He decided to move on elsewhere but that didn’t work out either.

“We kept in contact and when the chance came to get him back, we jumped at it. You don’t achieve what he did at Swindon Town without having a lot of ability.

“He’s hungry to do well for Swindon Supermarine. We will work hard to get him fit and up to speed, and then it’s up to him to take that second chance.

“From seeing him in the three months he was here last season, I have no doubt he will score a lot of goals at this level.”

The arrival of Waldon coincides with Oli Bailey’s departure from the club, with the striker heading closer to his Winchester home by joining Division One Central side Petersfield Town.

Waldon is set to go straight into the squad for Marine’s clash at home to Banbury United on Saturday. Bradley Gray misses out with a hamstring problem, while Josh Morse will have a late fitness test over an ankle injury.

The match pits Marine against one of their play-off rivals and Webb is predicting a tight encounter at the Webb’s Wood.

“I think people forget Banbury were relegated from the Premier Division last season so they are used to playing at a higher level,” said Webb.

“It’s no surprise that they have climbed the league and they are on a good run – they’re six unbeaten in the league.

“We played them on the opening day of the season and won 3-0 and are only one of two sides to beat them in the league.

“They will be a different prospect to what they were back then and they will come here with a lot of confidence.

“It will be a tough game but it’s an important one for us and we’re looking forward to it.

“December is very busy. We’ve got this hard game and then seven games next month.

“It’s going to be hard but we want to pick up as many points as we can from the next eight games to try to close that gap to the play-offs.”
