SWINDON Town manager Luke Williams was delighted to see his charges club together to earn a fine point at high-flying Gillingham this afternoon.

Despite a daunting task laid in front of them at Priestfield, Williams’ side navigated a tricky trip to the team with the finest home record in League One and held the Gills to a goalless draw, leaving their manager chuffed with the battling spirit on show.

When asked how difficult it was for Town to play their usual progressive style in challenging conditions, Williams told BBC Wiltshire: “We don’t like to ever make an excuse for not controlling the game, not dominating, but I think with the conditions and the opponents - impossible.

“I think that the players showed a side that we don’t always see and it’s been a question mark over the years with the Swindon boys; whether or not, (in) these games, they can get anything out of (them) and that was a good answer today from that group.

“I think it’s that we’ve got people that are desperate to play for the club and fight for each other.

“When the game is not controlled and things are not easy for you, it’s when you’ve got your mates around you and you feel some sort of responsibility towards them you drive yourself on and I think that’s what got them the point.”

Williams also admitted that Town rode their luck as they survived a penalty shout when the Gills’ Ryan Jackson went down under the attentions of Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill during the first half.

The Swindon boss added: “It’s impossible to come to Gillingham this season – the form they’re in, with the quality of players – without having some sort of moment where you have to ride your luck.

“So possibly, a bit of a let-off there and I think we created one or two chances ourselves that we could have scored from.

“(Winning a point) I think (was) about right. I don’t think there’s going to be any harder place for us to get a point this season.”
