SWINDON Town Under 18 coach Scott Lindsey believes that Jordan Young has a bright future ahead of him after the 16-year-old made his senior debut at Port Vale last Tuesday.

Young was not part of the squad that travelled to Gillingham on Saturday as Swindon look to manage the development of one of their young assets.

However, Lindsey was impressed by the maturity shown by Young during his professional bow and knows the left-footed forward will make more appearances in the future when the opportunity presents itself.

“Luke (Williams) gave me a call on the Monday evening to say he was going to take him, which I was over the moon about,” Lindsey told BBC Wiltshire.

“He got a good 30 minutes and I watched the game back myself the next day and I thought he was fantastic.

“It was a very comprehensive performance from somebody who is the fourth youngest player to make his debut and it looked as if he could deal with it no problem.

“He can play as the striker, he can play as the number 10 or he can play off the left.

“He is very comfortable receiving the ball and can twist and turn and is strong.

“He is someone who has a very bright future in the game, but more importantly, he is a great lad with a great attitude and deserves to have his chance.

“The way we do things here at Swindon is that we don’t want to over cook them.

“We want to bring him in when we feel it’s right and that might be a bit of luck where maybe there are a few first-team players missing.

“It might not be the right thing to keep him with the first team all the time - he needs to play.

“He played 90 minutes for me on Saturday morning, which was probably better than him coming to Gillingham and possibly not getting on.

“It’s an area where we have got to be careful.”

Lindsey will now have one eye on the Under 18s’ trip to Kenilworth Road where they take on Luton Town in the southern section final of the Youth Alliance Cup.

Having beat Cheltenham Town 1-0 in the last round, Swindon will travel to Bedfordshire on Tuesday, February 23.

“Along the way, we have played the likes of Wimbledon, MK Dons and Yeovil and have done really well,” added Lindsey.

“We played Cheltenham in the last round and of course Cheltenham beat us in the FA Youth Cup, so it was almost like a bit of sweet revenge.

“We have got Luton in the next round at Kenilworth Road and it will be a good test for us.”
