SWINDON College Old Boys have an anxious wait to see where their future lies having secured a win on the last day to lift them off the foot of the Southern Counties North table.

Mark Lea’s side recorded only their fourth victory of the season, having been promoted last term, with an 18-13 win at home to Beaconsfield.

With Drifters losing 32-12 at Marlow, College hauled themselves off the bottom and they now have to wait to see if that is sufficient to maintain their Southern Counties North status for next season.

“It was epic stuff,” said director of rugby Martin Lloyd. “It is one of those things now where we have to wait with bated breath to find out what it means for us.

“Even if we go down at least we have a little bit of pride then and we know there are teams in this league that we can beat.

“With a little bit more luck and a little bit more effort we can hold our own at this level.

“We are hoping that only one side goes down and we can stay in the league because it is where we feel we should be.”

Despite it being a home fixture, College were forced to move the game to Swindon’s Greenbridge Road due to pitch unavailability at Pipers Way and got off to the worst possible start as they conceded an unconverted try early on.

A Jack Kimber penalty had the hosts within two points at the break before Tucker Blinkhorn gave College the lead with a converted try.

There was an exchange of tries but College were able to hold out for the win and keep their slim survival hopes alive.

“You would expect us to start the quickest but they got into us and were looking good and very slowly we were able to turn it around,” added Lloyd.

“In the second half it was our fitness that told and we played some really good rugby and we were unstoppable.

“Eoin Crean, playing seven, was everywhere and a thorn in their side the whole game.

“One person I have to mention is Richard Smith, he has been a stalwart all season and he belies his age and was in the heart of everything that was good.

“It was one of those games where everything seemed to come together and it showed we have never given up hope.”
