BOXING trainer John Costello says that he is ‘very confident’ that Jamie Cox will clear his name next week.

The super-middleweight boxer was jailed for 26 weeks by Croydon magistrates on Monday, April 11, for assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend Viktoria Gribovskaja - 20 weeks for violence to secure entry and 12 weeks for criminal damage, to run concurrently.

The 29-year-old WBO European champion will appear before Croydon Crown Court on Friday, May 6, to appeal against his conviction.

“We are very, very confident that when Jamie goes for his appeal, he will clear his name on May 6,” Cox’s trainer Costello told the Advertiser.

“There are lots of things that will come out and we are confident that Jamie will be a free man.”

Before his conviction, Cox was on the verge of fighting for a world title.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist had been asked to fight in a final eliminator for the WBO world title with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to champion Gilberto Ramirez.

The southpaw boxer, who had his licence suspended when he was found guilty of all charges, was ranked fourth in the world by the WBO after winning and successfully defending his European belt with first round stoppages of Blas Miguel Martinez and Ferenc Albert respectively.
