CHRIS Taylor says that he cannot look back on Swindon Supermarine’s season with pride despite them reaching the play-offs.

The Webb’s Wood Stadium outfit saw their Southern League Premier Division dreams quashed for a third time in four years at the semi-final stage of the after season lottery as they were beaten 2-1 at Taunton Town.

The South Marston midfielder, who was also involved in the play-off defeats to Merthyr in 2013 and 2014, felt that the team were lacking a cutting edge in both boxes as their Somerset hosts came from a goal behind to snatch victory.

“It felt almost too easy – especially the first half,” Taylor told the Advertiser. “If we were a bit more clinical, a bit more ruthless in front of goal we should have finished them off.

“At 1-0 they have always got a chance and they changed their formation, went long, went direct, they got a lucky goal – it looked offside, but regardless it has gone 1-1.

“We still had chances after that, we had a free-kick put over and they have gone up the other end and scored– the goalie got the assist.

“You couldn’t fault the performance – it was just the ruthlessness in both boxes that has let us down.

“The top teams have that ruthlessness and go on and finish that game 2 or 3-0.

“That is what we should have done, we didn’t do that. It is all ifs and buts.”

When the dust settles on Tuesday’s defeat the 30-year-old says that he can only look back at the campaign in one way.

“I’ll look back and think it is a failure,” the former Swindon Town youngster said.

“We lost, we haven’t done anything.

“The only team that is going to do well is whoever wins (the play-off final) on Monday – all the other three failed.

“I’m disappointed, that is three times now – it is not good enough. It is hard to take.

“I thought we had control of the game for the entirety.

“We had a good early goal from Josh, we had a lot of chances, we can only blame ourselves – we should have put the game to bed.

“Their two goals were bad defending, especially the last one.

“They didn’t play that well, the game was there for the taking – we let ourselves down really.”
