STRIKE duo Michael Smith and Jonathan Obika both expect to be back at Swindon Town next season.

The duo’s contracts both run out this summer but it is understood that the club have an option to extend those for a further season, which will be taken up.

Smith has featured for Town just five times this season and just once since August after spending two loan spells away from the club.

The 24-year-old joined Portsmouth on a 93-day emergency loan on transfer deadline day in January, which ran out following their 2-0 win at Hartlepool United in League Two on Saturday.

Swindon still have one game to play this season but Smith is unlikely to feature in Sunday’s match at home to Shrewsbury Town as he has been told by the club that he can go on holiday.

In an interview with the Portsmouth News, Smith stated that he would be open to a return to Fratton Park but revealed his immediate future was back at Town as they would be taking up the option of the extra year on his contract.

“I honestly don’t know what is going to happen in the future but I would consider coming back (to Portsmouth),” said Smith.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I’ve been treated well and the relationship with the fans and players has been really good.

“I rang Swindon last week, they have nothing to play for, are safe and can’t get to the play-offs, so the manager said unless they have an injury crisis with the strikers then I could go and have a holiday.

“They are going to be taking up their option on me, so I have another year.

“I guess I’ll be back there for pre-season, I’ll have to wait and see.

“I have been focusing on Portsmouth, so haven’t really sat down and thought about things.

“That is a conversation I am going to have to have with my agent.

“It has been said I want to move back home to the Newcastle area but it’s not the be-all and end-all. I’ve got to put my career first – which I did coming to Portsmouth.

“I would go anywhere, I just want to play football and win things.”

After playing a back-up role to Smith and Andy Williams last season, Obika has become a key man in the Town side in 2015-16 and bagged his 12th goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Rochdale.

Swindon chairman Lee Power has previously revealed that the club have received enquiries for Obika but the player himself told BBC Wiltshire after the Rochdale match that he believes he will still be at the County Ground next season.

“As far as I know I am here next season,” said Obika.

“I love playing for the club. I enjoy it, especially the team and the management, so I look forward to it.”
