MICHAEL Coles has set his sights on winning the Unicorns Knockout Trophy after Wiltshire qualified for the quarter-finals.

The County headed to Buckinghamshire on Sunday knowing that avoiding defeat at the The Meadow in Chesham would see them through.

Now, after the 21-run success, Wiltshire will now travel to North Perrott on Sunday June 12 to tackle neighbours Dorset in their quarter-final clash.

“We are more than capable of winning the trophy,” said skipper Coles. “Cornwall, who won the trophy last year, have been knocked out.

“That gives you a great chance of winning the whole tournament, and if we play to our full potential, then there is no reason why we can’t.

“We have a settled squad, we have been together for around four years – we just have to stay positive.”

Having won the toss in Chesham, Coles sent Wiltshire into bat and Steve Bullen and Uzi Qureshi get them off to a decent start as they plundered 34 runs in the opening five overs before the former was back in the pavilion for 19.

Qureshi went on to record his half-century before he fell for 52 as Wiltshire were 127-3 in the 24th over.

With the wicket offering the seamers and spinners plenty, Wiltshire kept things tight before being dismissed in the 49th over for 192.

“Before the game started, I felt that we would probably need around 220-230, but on reflection at the end of our innings, I felt that we were maybe 20 runs short,” Coles said.

“But we defended 190-odd at Warminster earlier in the season so if we kept things tight and didn't give away silly runs, then I knew that we could do it.”

Despite opener Saif Zaib hitting 89, Buckinghamshire were never allowed to attack the Wiltshire bowlers as the visitors reduced them to 87-4 in the 25th over, with Andy Carroll and Tahir Afridi piling on the pressure.

After Wiltshire’s opening bowlers had the hosts on the back foot, Ed Young and Joe King wrapped up the tail with three wickets apiece, while Jake Linnott pitched in with a brace.

“After our innings, it was easier to see when to get the spinners on,” Coles said. “The wicket was offering plenty to both the seamers and the spinners.

“Andy Carroll and Tahir did a good job early on preventing them from piling on the runs in the power play and then we just kept things tight.”

Wiltshire return on Sunday, June 5 when they make the trip north to face Cheshire in the Minor Counties Championship Western Division.
