CRUCIAL late runs from Jon Sore and Tahir Afridi gave Wiltshire the advantage at the end of the first day of their Unicorns Championship clash at home to Cornwall on Sunday.

Michael Coles’ men looked in trouble at 149-7 but Sore (32 not out) and Afridi (37 not out) shared an unbeaten stand of 73 for the eighth wicket to leave Wiltshire on 222-7 at the close of play at Corsham.

Cornwall won the toss and elected to bowl but the hosts got off to a positive start as openers Steve Bullen (39) and Jayden Levitt (39) put on 63 before the latter fell to Jordan Thomas (3-38).

Wickets began to fall at regular intervals after that, although Ashur Morrison (33) and wicketkeeper Patrick Greishaber (21) did provide some resistance to ensure the runs kept ticking over for the home side.

Once those two departed with Wiltshire still shy of the 150-mark, Cornwall seemed to have the game in their hands but Sore and Afridi were able to steady the ship and put the hosts in a strong position heading into day two.
