PORTSMOUTH maintain an interest in bringing Swindon Town’s Michael Smith back to Fratton Park, the Advertiser understands.

The 24-year-old striker spent the second half of the season on-loan with the south coast club, scoring four goals in 16 appearances, and is believed to be one of Pompey boss Paul Cook’s targets as he looks to bolster his offensive options this summer.

Last month, Swindon took up their option to extend Smith’s contract until the end of next term but chairman Lee Power conceded that the frontman’s future may still lie away from the County Ground.

Speaking to BBC Wiltshire in May, Power said: “I wouldn’t be disappointed if we had to keep Smudger again here next year. I think he does a job.

“Portsmouth really like him, as do two or three other teams.

“If you spoke to Michael, I think he would be the first to admit he would like to move away.”

Portsmouth were one of a clutch of clubs chasing the signature of Birmingham City striker Lee Novak, who bagged 15 goals during a spell on loan with Chesterfield this term.

However, last Friday, the 27-year-old has joined relegated Charlton Athletic, who last week reportedly agreed a fee with Town for Nicky Ajose.

The Addicks were Smith’s employers before he moved to Town in January 2014 and the following season, the former Darlington man scored 18 goals as Swindon reached the League One play-off final.

However, this term, after a reported move to Sheffield United for a fee believed to be in the region of £600,000 fell through, Smith joined Barnsley on loan, albeit with a view to a permanent move.

But, after failing to find the net at Oakwell, Smith found himself back with Town in January this year before joining Pompey.
