TEEN footballers reached the top of their game this weekend when they won a trophy in the biggest youth tournament in the world.

Swindon Town Football In The Community Under-14 girls showed the England Euro squad how it's done when they reached the B final of the Gothia Cup held in Sweden.

They had to face off against Finnish rivals Jarvenpaan Palloseura but toppled them with a convincing 2-0 win, thanks to goalscorers Lois Beer and Flo Ashton.

This followed a tense week of competition which saw the 15-strong squad win seven matches, lose one and draw one.

And they were given a heroes' welcome when their winners' bus pulled up outside the County Ground on Sunday afternoon.

There were tears of joy and bright smiles as friends and family members welcomed the girls home to Swindon.

Captain Hannah Peachey, 14, triumphantly carried the glittering trophy off the team bus. She said she was overjoyed with the team’s success.

“It was just amazing being there. I thought we had the potential to win but it was still a surprise. I’m really proud of all the team. We had so many people cheering us on too, it was brilliant,” she said.

Her proud mum Jenni added: “I couldn’t be happier for them, there’s been a few tears because everyone is happy and so emotional with everything the team have done. As parents we’re so proud of all of them. They’ve achieved so much in just a week.”

The tournament which is known as the World Youth Cup has been running all week with a host of Town teams across a variety of age groups taking part and playing teams from across the globe.

Flo Ashton, 13, said she was thrilled to have netted a winning goal.

“It was my first Gothia Cup and it was incredible. There were ups and downs but as a team we pulled through. I was so happy when I scored, it was the best feeling in the world and especially do it on that stage.”

The squad is the first team in 10 years to take home a trophy from the tournament.

Manager Jon Holloway said the team had done the town proud and tackled the international challenge well.

“They had focus, determination and they trained really hard for this and there is an amazing amount of talent on the squad. It’s an amazing feeling. The girls have looked really strong not just this week but for the last three months,” he said.

“They put on a really convincing display when they played in the final. I think the other team let the first goal really affect them and we were strong throughout. It’s the first time any of the teams have won a trophy so it’s a really special feeling.”
