ATHLETES from far and wide are preparing to take part in the mammoth UK Ultra Distance Trail Running Championship this Saturday.

The challenging course is a total of 86 miles long and starts on the hills near Luton before heading west across the Berkshire and Wiltshire Downs towards Avebury.

Last year, there were two new records set in the event. Dan Lawson completed the course in 12 hours and seven minutes on his way to victory, while Jess Gray set a new weman’s record when she crossed the line in 14 hours and 17 minutes.

The course is mostly off-road with the participants relying on signs to navigate the 86-mile stretch before heading towards Avebury’s stone circle.

Spectators are welcome to cheer the athletes on throughout the duration of the event. General competitors set off from Ivinghoe Beacon from 10am, with the Championship runners setting off a bit later at midday.

Organisers expect parking areas to be busy at the start and finish, so urge anyone who is planning on watching the race to plan ahead.

For those inspired to take up trail running, The Ridgeway National Trail is a great location to exercise and train.

The route of the trail and more information can be found on the National Trail website (www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ridgeway/plan) and further details about the event can be found at www.ridgewaychallenge.com.
