Swindon Town star Jake Cain has called for summer signings following the recent acquisition of Michael Flynn as the club’s new manager.

Cain joined from Liverpool in January signing a two-and-a-half year contract and is raring to go for the next season after a challenging campaign personally.

Cain previously played under the incoming Town manager at Newport in the 2021/22 season and was excited by the news of being reunited with his former manager.

“He was a really good guy and a really good man-manager who likes to play good, attacking football,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to it as I think he will add a lot of steel to us with creative football and I can’t wait to get started.”

Speaking about what he thinks needs to happen going forward, he continued: “We will learn a lot from this year as it’s a young team but we need a lot of additions with a bit more of experience and steel.

“I think next year will be a really good season for us and its looking promising.

“It took a lot to settle in as I was in and out the team but I just know that I’ve got a lot more to prove and I want to show the fans what I can do.”

The 21-year-old scored his first goal for the Robins in their final game of the season on Monday, netting the second goal in their 2-1 home victory over Crawley Town.

The midfielder lined up a free kick from 30 yards and saw his powerful shot fly into the top corner, with the goal eventually proving enough to hand Swindon the win.

“I’ve had a few testers in the last few games, hitting the bar twice, and as soon as we got the foul in that position I thought this is me all over,” said Cain.

“I practised a lot in lockdown and mastered my technique in my run-up, scoring a few at Liverpool but it was about taking it into a man’s environment and doing it in front of a crowd.

“As soon as it left my foot I knew it was in and I started to run off and celebrate so I’m delighted.”

The club announced on Monday that Mike Flynn would take over as manager from next season onwards with the former Walsall coach in attendance at the County Ground on the day too.

Flynn has managed over 300 games in EFL League Two, including trips to two play-off finals with Newport County.
