FORMER Swindon Town loanee Harry Toffolo has been charged with misconduct over 375 alleged breaches of Football Association betting rules.

FA rules state players are prohibited from "placing bets or passing on information that could be used for betting," something Toffolo may have done almost 400 times.

The charge relates to a period stretching from January 2014 to March 2017 while the now 27-year-old was a Norwich City player, but Toffolo played 30 times for Swindon during the second half of the 14/15 campaign - inlcuding in the League One play-off final against Preston North End.

He also had loan spells with Rotherham United, Peterborough United, and Scunthorpe United during the period of alleged breaches.

Toffolo provided eight assists and scored one goal during his time at Swindon, and was a hugely popular figure among fans.

The defender stated he was open to returning to the County Ground in the summer of 2015, but a move failed to materialise.

The Nottingham Forest defender has until Wednesday, July 19 to respond to the aforementioned charges.

An FA spokesperson said: “Nottingham Forest’s Harry Toffolo has been charged with misconduct in relation to our betting rules.

“It’s alleged that the defender breached FA Rule E1(b) 375 times between 22 January 2014 and 18 March 2017. Harry Toffolo has until Wednesday 19 July 2023 to provide his response.”

Toffolo joined Premier League Forest from Huddersfield Town in July last year after two-and-a-half years with the West Yorkshire club.

He made 21 senior appearances, including nine league starts, for the newly-promoted club last season as they retained their top-flight status.

Toffolo almost completed a move to Belgian top-flight club Anderlecht on deadline day in January but turned down the switch and was later included in Forest's 25-man Premier League squad list for the second half of the campaign.

News of Toffolo's potential breaches comes months after Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney was found guilty of breaking FA betting rules.

Toney, originally charged in November 2022, admitted to 232 breaches and was initially banned from football for 11 months - although that was later downgraded to eight after it was revealed that the 27-year-old was suffering from a gambling addiction.

He missed out on Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad last December as a result of the investigation, though, and will remain unable to play for either club or country until January 2024.
